According to the Houston Police Department, the incident began when the homeowner's daughter, a mother of two young children, opened the door to a group of men carrying a DoorDash delivery bag. The men, later identified as Brian A. Garcia Chavez, 18, Michael Perez, 38, and Raymond Perez, 35, allegedly forced their way into the home at gunpoint, zip-tying the woman and forcing her to lead them through the rooms in search of valuables.
Shootout with Police
The situation escalated when a neighbor called for help, prompting a police response. Upon entering the home, officers confronted two of the suspects, leading to a confrontation. During the apprehension of Michael Perez, Raymond Perez emerged from a back room and opened fire, striking Officer S. Durfee in the leg. Officer Durfee returned fire, but did not hit anyone. Raymond Perez then fled the scene, while a third suspect, Brian A. Garcia Chavez, was waiting in a vehicle and also attempted to escape.
Suspects Apprehended
Police were able to capture Raymond Perez roughly one block away from the home, and he was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Several hours later, SWAT team officers located and arrested Garcia Chavez, who was also charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, along with Michael Perez.
Victims Unharmed, Officer Recovering
Fortunately, the woman and her two young children were not physically harmed during the ordeal. Officer Durfee was transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and has since been released, with expectations of a full recovery.
