Moncler's Genius Collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and Nigo Blends Iconic Brands for a Retro-Futuristic Masterpiece

Moncler's recent showcase in Shanghai, China, was a testament to the brand's commitment to innovation and collaboration. The "City of Genius" event saw the Italian outerwear brand team up with a diverse array of creative talents, including fashion designer Rick Owens, former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, and musicians A$AP Rocky and Willow Smith. However, one of the most intriguing projects to emerge from this event was the three-way collaboration between Moncler, Japanese fashion designer Nigo, and German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz.

Blending Iconic Brands for a Retro-Futuristic Masterpiece

Merging Moncler's Outdoor Legacy with Mercedes-Benz's Iconic G-Class

The collaboration between Moncler, Nigo, and Mercedes-Benz resulted in the creation of a unique "art-piece" version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a vehicle that has become a cultural icon in its own right. Nigo, who is currently the creative director of Kenzo and the founder of the legendary streetwear brand A Bathing Ape (Bape), was tasked with reimagining the distinctive G-Class, known colloquially as the "G-Wagon."Nigo's design, titled "Project G-Class Past II Future," is a striking blend of nostalgia and futurism. Drawing inspiration from the 1990s, a decade he considers among the most influential from a cultural and creative standpoint, Nigo has infused the G-Class with a distinct urban character. The vehicle features a sound system installation from audio engineer and G-Class enthusiast Devon Turnbull, allowing for a unique interactive experience.The design of the "Project G-Class Past II Future" is both minimalistic and bold, with a cool palette of silver and olive green, accented by orange and gold details, including a golden fuel can. The most striking feature, however, is the quilted roof cover, which directly references the first collaboration between Moncler and Mercedes-Benz, further cementing the connection between the two iconic brands.

Nigo's Genius Collection: Blending Moncler's Outdoor Legacy with Mercedes-Benz Iconography

Alongside the "Project G-Class Past II Future" art piece, Nigo also designed an accompanying fashion collection that will be released in April 2025, coinciding with the limited-edition G-Class model. This collection, rooted in 1990s style, seamlessly blends Moncler's history of outdoor adventure and innovation with the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star emblem.Nigo's design signatures, such as playful motifs and badges across varsity silhouettes, are evident throughout the collection. Vintage Moncler advertising has been blown up and incorporated into the collection's prints, further reinforcing the brand's rich heritage. The result is a nostalgic yet contemporary range that includes windbreakers, field jackets, checkered shirts, baggy Bermuda shorts, beanie hats, and topstitched, workwear-inspired denim.Nigo's approach to the collection was to create pieces that encourage the wearer to mix and match, allowing them to express their personal style and identity. "The pieces are designed to allow the wearer to interpret it in their own way, so they can project their personal style and identity," he explains. "It's about giving people the freedom to express who they are through the collection, rather than dictating a specific feeling."

A Collaboration of Iconic Proportions

The Moncler, Nigo, and Mercedes-Benz collaboration is a testament to the power of creative partnerships. Nigo, a prolific collaborator with a decade-spanning relationship with Pharrell Williams and the late Virgil Abloh, sees these projects as opportunities for creative growth and exploration."Collaborations are incredibly important [to my work]," Nigo says. "They allow a chance for creative growth and exploration, which [nowadays] can be rare. This one was a chance to step outside my usual boundaries, to experiment with a different side of myself."The "Project G-Class Past II Future" art piece and the accompanying fashion collection represent a unique fusion of Moncler's outdoor heritage, Nigo's streetwear expertise, and Mercedes-Benz's iconic automotive design. The result is a retro-futuristic masterpiece that celebrates the intersection of fashion, automotive design, and cultural influence.With the limited-edition G-Class Past II Future model and Nigo's Genius collection set to launch in April 2025, fashion and automotive enthusiasts alike will have the opportunity to own a piece of this remarkable collaboration. It's a testament to the power of cross-pollination between industries and the enduring appeal of iconic brands when they come together to push the boundaries of creativity.
